Are you the captain of your fate or do you just submit to whatever life chooses to throw at you? Do you think you are who you are because of your job? Do you define who you are by something that can easily be taken away from you? It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do for the rest of your life right now. Life is not a race nor a competition. But do you want to still be aimless five years from now? Ask yourself what you want to have. Do you want the average 2.5 kids and live in a house with a white picket fence? How are you going to achieve that? There are a lot of questions, we know. If you don’t have all the answers right now that’s fine, but creating life goals can help to ensure that you’re on the right track when you do have it all figured out.

Who do you want to be?

The top reason why you should create life goals is that you get to define who you want to be. You define who you are, not your job, not the amount of money you make, and not your role in someone else’s life. Do you want to serve others and become a nurse? Are you constantly reinventing yourself? Do you want to be a multi-hyphenated achiever or you just want to be happy with a simple life and family? Creating life goals means you get to know yourself better. It sets you on the road to self-actualization – to be the best you that you were meant to be.

Where do you want your life to go?

When you don’t set out goals, it’s easy to see yourself ten years down the road with nothing to show for it. No job achievements, no monetary assets, maybe not even any additional skills from when you graduated college. Have you even got out of the country and tried working abroad? Where do you see yourself in five or in ten years’ time? What do you want to achieve? Creating life goals forces you to think long-term. It gets you out of the mindset of acquiring things and/or doing things for momentary pleasure, but instead, it lifts your eyes towards the horizon.

How do you define success?

How do you measure success?

When you create your life goals, you get to define success. You get to decide whether you were successful or not. It protects you from other people’s criticism – because you know what’s important to you. It’s got nothing to do with monetary value, it’s got to do with what you hold dear. You define success by what is important to you. It’s got to do with your inner compass, and how you want to achieve your goals in relation to your values.

Why should you create life goals?

In conclusion, you should create life goals in order to better know who you are, as well as to find out which direction your life should take, and ultimately to understand success as defined by your values in life. Once you have that blueprint, you can get to live your life with purpose.
