Global Wellness Day: How Do You Prioritize Your Own Health?
<p><strong>Global Wellness Day</strong>, June 11th, encourages us to ask ourselves, <em>“How can I live a healthier life?”</em>. This awareness day aims to help people recognize the value of their lives individually and as part of society. We can support this day by participating in wellness events such as group activities, mental health seminars, cooking classes and talks on various subjects.</p> <p>However, if you want to find your answer to <em>&#8220;How can I live a healthier life?&#8221; </em>individually, take some time to meditate, disconnect, recharge and recuperate in ways that work for you. It can sometimes be exhausting and hectic when you have to coordinate your mind and body (neck/back/hands) to do your work. But alternating patterns of relaxed and hectic work keep me going, and my weekends bring joy. I like to enjoy time with my family, cook, take a vacation, watch a movie or do absolutely nothing. Here are my thoughts to keep yourself happy today for a healthier tomorrow:</p> <h4>1. Appreciation</h4> <p>Always be grateful for what you have rather than nagging about what you may be lacking.</p> <h4>2. Kindness</h4> <p>Be kind to yourself and others. It’s equally important to practice kindness to yourself as you do to others. This is the power of acceptance and growth. </p> <h4>3. Managing Stress</h4> <p>Stress is an inevitable part of life. Try to manage it by doing what gives you peace and joy. </p> <h4>4. Lifestyle Modification</h4> <p>Eat, sleep and move well.</p> <h4>5. Get Social</h4> <p>Try to socialize as much as you can. Social people have the opportunity to make others happy, and that feeling gives you peace and happiness itself. Simple habits like stretching with simple yoga pose in bed when we wake up, brisk walking for 20 mins a day, or even preparing a healthy homemade breakfast or lunch before heading to work.&nbsp;</p> <p>Start small and work towards the short-term goal, eventually to a long-term goal. Create SMART behaviors or habits that do not require very high motivation. <strong>Make sure your goals are:</strong></p> <ul><li>S – specific</li><li>M – measurable</li><li>A – attainable/ Action-based</li><li>R – realistic/ Relevant</li><li>T – time-based</li></ul> <p></p> <h3>As a registered nurse, how do you prioritize your health?</h3> <p><strong>Sharon De Cruz: </strong>I ensure to have 8 hours of sleep despite working morning or night shift and exercise 3 times per week, at least going for a brisk walk in the neighborhood. I also maintain a good work-life balance because I never talk about work out of work.
