In honor of Nurses Week, we had the privilege of sitting down with Ajita Menon, an esteemed HR professional from Kerala, India. With nearly a decade of experience excelling in nursing recruitment in the UAE, Ajita shares invaluable insights into the relocation process for Indian nurses, providing a comprehensive breakdown of steps, compelling reasons to consider working in the UAE, and a detailed cost analysis.

Let’s dive in:

Hi Ajita. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello, my name is Ajita Menon. I’ve been living in the UAE for the past 18 years and have worked in the healthcare industry here.

What draws Indian nurses to pursue nursing careers in the UAE?

The UAE is an excellent country to live in, and its leadership is very supportive of Indian expatriates. Everyone is welcome to work here, and it’s very close to India, just a 3-4 hour flight away. Traveling back home is easy with no issues.

One of the main attractions of working here is the good salary. Unlike Western countries where taxes are deducted, in the UAE, you get a tax-free salary, which is great. Furthermore, it is one of the safest countries in the world and to top that, you don’t need to learn any additional languages or secure IELTS or OET certificates; passing the government exam is sufficient to get a job.

What initial steps should nurses take when embarking on their UAE journey?

First and foremost, aspiring Indian nurses should complete their degree – GNM, BSc, or MSc in Nursing from a recognized institution. The second step is to obtain licensure from the Indian Nursing Council. Gaining relevant experience is crucial before deciding on the emirate to work in and passing the eligibility exams required for that region. For GNM, you need 1 year of experience, and for BSc/MSc, you need two years. You then need to decide which emirate you want to work in and pass their eligibility exam.

How do nurses obtain a license in the UAE?

To work in different emirates like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or the Northern Emirates, you need to obtain specific licenses such as DHA, HAAD, or MOH, respectively. These licenses require passing exams and meeting certain eligibility criteria.

What role does credential verification play in the licensing process?

It’s important to verify all education and employment credentials before submitting them to the licensing authority. DataFlow, a trusted partner for all major government healthcare regulators, conducts Primary Source Verification (PSV) of your credentials. This step is crucial in the licensing process. Upon receiving a positive PSV verification, you can proceed with applying for your license and start job hunting.

What effective job application strategies can Indian nurses benefit from in the UAE?

From an HR perspective, I’ve found that tailoring applications to highlight relevant experience and qualifications is key. Additionally, emphasizing skills and competencies sought by employers can significantly enhance a nurse’s chances of securing employment.

What factors influence the salary of nurses in the UAE?

Several factors affect nurses’ salaries, including the emirate they work in, their role, type of institution (government or private), experience, and qualifications. On average, Indian nurses can expect a minimum salary of INR 1,00,000 – INR 1,50,000 per month.

How are Indian nurses perceived within the local UAE community?

Indian nurses are highly respected by the local community in the UAE, which serves as an additional motivation for them. Their professionalism and dedication to patient care are appreciated and valued.
