<h2>What is OET?</h2>
<p>OET stands for <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Occupational English Test</a>. As the name suggests, it is an English test to determine if you have sufficient communication skills to perform your duties in your chosen healthcare profession. You can present a passing OET certificate to organizations asking for <a href="https://www.trueprofile.io/member/resources/can-you-get-a-visa-under-the-uk-points-based-system" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of your English proficiency</a>. </p>
<h2>Who is OET for?</h2>
<p>Occupational English Test (OET) was specifically created for the healthcare sector, with tests developed for 12 medical professions. OET has tests for: </p>
<ul><li>Dentistry</li><li>Dietetics</li><li>Medicine</li><li>Nursing</li><li>Occupational Therapy</li><li>Optometry</li><li>Pharmacy</li><li>Physiotherapy</li><li>Podiatry</li><li>Radiography</li><li>Speech Pathology </li><li>Veterinary Science</li></ul>

<h2>Which Organizations and Entities Accept OET?</h2>
<p>OET is an <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/who-recognises-oet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">internationally recognized English language test</a>. Native English-speaking countries such as Canada, the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland accept OET. Dubai and Singapore, which have a melting pot of cultures, recognize OET to prove your English proficiency. Numerous government regulators, immigration offices, authorities, and employers welcome an OET certification as proof of your English skills.</p>
<h2>How Do You Take an OET Test?</h2>
<p>You can <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/delivery-modes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">take the OET</a> at a <a href="https://support.occupationalenglishtest.org/hc/en-gb/sections/201953615-Booking-OET" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">test venue on paper</a>, a <a href="https://support.occupationalenglishtest.org/hc/en-gb/sections/360001218956-OET-on-computer-at-a-venue?_ga=2.76169373.986727393.1632368705-372069326.1625303448&_gac=1.158926664.1629100443.CjwKCAjwmeiIBhA6EiwA-uaeFVo0m9vHFNcgSaX9ft8yJLEfEP83XoLEKrCxrXrqlfeFc95NYfAzvxoCFa4QAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">test venue using a computer</a>, or <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/delivery-modes/oet-at-home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">from the convenience of your home</a>. OET on paper is the most widely available test, while OET by computer is <a href="https://blog.specialistlanguagecourses.com/news/oet-computer-vs-paper" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">currently available only for OET Medicine and OET Nursing</a>. You can book OET@Home if there are no test venues in your country, providing that you can meet the <a href="https://www.prometric.com/sites/default/files/2020-04/PrometricProUserGuide_3.1_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">system requirements</a>. Check out the <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/book-oet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">available test dates</a> in your country when booking, as the schedules have a closing date. Take note that there are some test venues that are <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/coronavirus-update/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">currently closed due to the pandemic</a>.</p>
<h2>What are the Test Components?</h2>
<p>OET consists of 4 sub-tests which take approximately 175 minutes to sit. The sub-tests are:</p>
<p><strong>Listening</strong> – According to OET, the <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/listening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Listening sub-test</a> has 42 questions, takes 50 minutes, and is divided into 3 parts. In Part A, you will listen to 2 consultation extracts, while Part B has 6 recorded short workplace extracts. Part C will give you 2 recordings of healthcare topic presentations. You must answer the questions as you listen, and you will have 2 minutes to review all your answers at the end of the Listening sub-test.</p>
<p><strong>Reading</strong> – The <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/reading/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reading sub-test</a> also has 42 questions and will take 60 minutes to complete. Like the Listening sub-test, the Reading sub-test is also divided into 3 parts. Part A has 20 questions for expeditious reading and tests your skill in getting information quickly and efficiently. Part B and Part C test your skills in understanding 6 short texts (B) and getting details and opinions from 2 healthcare topics (C). </p>
<p><strong>Writing</strong> – The <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/writing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Writing sub-test</a> gives you an occupation-specific task and takes 45 minutes to complete. For example, you’ll get a nursing-specific letter-writing task if you take the <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/healthcare-professions/nursing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">English Language test for nursing</a>. The same is true for doctors who took the <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/healthcare-professions/medicine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OET for doctors</a>. Take note that punctuation and spelling are taken into account when scoring for the Writing sub-test.</p>
<p><strong>Speaking</strong> – The <a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/speaking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Speaking sub-test</a> involves role-play (you will play your profession while the interlocutor/examiner plays the patient/client/carer) and will take approximately 20 minutes. You will be given note cards about the roles, the situation, and what is required of you. There is a 3 minute prep time before each role-play, which will take 5 minutes each. Take note that you will be judged on your linguistic skills and your clinical communication skills. </p>
<h2>What are the OET Scores?</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/test-information/results-assessment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OET results</a> are marked by trained assessors for each sub-test, but results for Reading and Listening Parts B and C are assessed by a computer. Your results are given numerically on a scale from 0 – 500 for each sub-test, with a corresponding OET letter grade. OET numeric score of 450 – 500 gives you an A, while a score of 350 – 440 will award you a B. Getting at least a <a href="https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/registration-applications/application-guides/full-registration-for-international-medical-graduates/your-knowledge-of-english" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">B grade for your OET is acceptable</a> to <a href="https://www.trueprofile.io/member/resources/how-to-work-in-the-uk-as-an-overseas-nurse" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apply as an overseas nurse in the UK</a>.</p>
