The concept of identity becomes even more complex once the implications of today’s digital world are considered. The increasing amount of data stored as part of our digital footprint alongside the rising instances of identity theft and news of data breaches from mainstream data collectors means that we are frequently reminded of the importance of securing our personal data. Thats why to make it easier for you it is important to unify your digital identities to keep track of them.

Our use of blockchain technology from the inception of TrueProfile.io highlights our team’s long-standing commitment towards helping our Members to future-proof their verified documents. We’re proud to reveal that a new integration with uPort takes this one step further and encourages our members to unify their digital identities – including their TrueProofs – in one secure, blockchain-based location.

Future-proofing your TrueProofs with uPort

The concept of TrueProfile.io has always been focused on putting our users in charge of securing, accessing and sharing their verified documents. Our new integration with uPort takes this one step further as we have created a solution which acknowledges the future of identity solutions and moves towards the use of self-sovereign concepts.

Your verifications will of course still be available and stored securely on TrueProfile.io page and can still be downloaded and shared from your myTrueProfile page.

However, you will also have the option to store your digital documents as verifiable credentials in your uPort mobile wallet. What does that mean? When you open the uPort mobile app for the first time, you immediately create a digital identity in the form of a decentralized identifier (DID), anchored to the Ethereum blockchain. With your uPort identity, you can now receive your digital verifications in the form of verifiable credentials, secured by being cryptographically signed by TrueProfile.io. You are now in full control of your credentials, and can manage who you share them with and when. While this is ultimately a privacy-preserving and secure way for data storage of your credentials, it allows your verifications to be portable and reusable – thereby removing hours and days of paperwork that you previously had to partake in to get verified with potential employers.

Aside from being a convenient and secure place to store digital documents, uPort’s offering comes as part of a much bigger realisation around the importance of putting users in charge of their own data. The uptake of blockchain technology has disrupted a multitude of sectors including real estate, banking, education, healthcare and even government. This disruption has contributed towards the growing hunger for our identities to become unanchored from the confines of a centralised administrator.

The onset of the identity revolution

We each are guilty of having a forgettable number of usernames, passwords and portals which highlight the separate access points for our own personal data. Of course, platforms such as Facebook and Google have tried to remedy this by holding the key to unpacking access with a single entry point controlled by their own log ins, but serious instances of data breaches and personal information leaks have highlighted the security issues of having a centralised administrator.

The security issues around storing, sharing and processing personal information have caused a widespread uneasiness among consumers which has paved the way for innovation around the infrastructure of our data.

The utopia of decentralised identity

Blockchain has become a mainstream solution around the same time as huge data issues have been uncovered. This scenario has opened the door for the concept of decentralised identity management, with utopia of this being ‘self-sovereign identity’ (SSI).

If SSI was to be implemented, our personal identity data would be completely controlled by the respective individual. In its most radical expression, think of your identity being broadly accepted without your parents ever having to pick up your birth certificate bestowed by the local municipality from which all your future documents would be created: ID, passport, driving licence etc. Essentially, SSI would take identity sharing right back to a digital-free world where documents were filed in a safe place like a safety deposit box or a wallet, and the individual chose precisely who their document was shown to or shared with. In today’s world, this would hold the same principles in theory; however the identity components would be stored digitally and would not be accessible without the consent of the owner of the data.

The aspirations towards SSI becoming a reality would involve a huge overhaul of the infrastructure of identity information. There are many pilot programs and some in early implementation currently in place to test the feasibility of SSI, which would of course transform the lives of an estimated one billion people who struggle to prove their identity due to a variety of economic factors.

While we wait to see how the concept of SSI transforms, a prevalent hybrid solution has been created by uPort, an application which sets out to return the ownership of identity to the individual and enables users to have control over the way that their personal information is accessed, stored and shared.

uPort’s trusted data solution for identity

While we wait to see how the concept of SSI transforms, we see a lot of value in adopting hybrid solutions that benefit both consumers and enterprises alike. For that reason, we have built an integration between TrueProfile.io and uPort. uPort is a user-centric data platform anchored on the Ethereum blockchain. It puts individuals, like you – our Members – in complete control of their digital identities and personal data by providing them with a decentralized ‘wallet’ on their mobile phone.

From the uPort wallet, our Members can receive and store their positively verified TrueProofs which they can share with specific employers or authorities. Users are able to granularly choose which elements of their identity (such as ID documents and verified credentials) to share, and with whom.

If you have any questions about using uPort to store and share your TrueProofs then please feel free to reach out to us via our contact form.
