If you’ve been notified that you failed your pre-employment background check, it’s normal of course to think, “Now what?” The important thing to remember is that this doesn’t necessarily mean that all job opportunities are now out of your reach, providing your negative result was an honest error and not a result of fraudulent information.

Possibilities of why the investigation came back as negative

There are a lot of scenarios which can cause background screening to return a negative result. There are also instances where the location of an organization suffered a calamity and their records got destroyed – although this would result in “Unable to Verify” and not negative. If the course you studied in college has not been authorized by any accrediting body, your verification would result in a discrepancy. The result would be the same if the school is operating without the necessary permits from your country’s governing body.

What you certainly don’t want is that YOU or someone representing you falsified documents or misrepresented a detail in a document that you submitted. There are countries that deal severely with document fraudsters, sometimes going to the extent of incarcerating perpetrators.

Paving the way for an easy verification

The best way to avoid a negative background check is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Make sure that when you submit documents for your pre-employment requirements, they are authentic and of the clearest possible copy. If possible, notify your former employers or your registrar that someone might contact them to verify your tenure. Indicate clearly in your application if your company had branches, or if your Human Resources department is not centralized.

Transparency

Most of the time, when an investigation into your background yields an undesirable result, you may not hear of them. What you might get are that you haven’t been considered for the job, or that you need to get in touch with them if you want more information. With TrueProfile.io, when we do a Primary Source Verification and the results come up with a Discrepancy, we share with you the reason why. We are open to reclassifying the end result depending on the situation.

Future-proof your documents

You don’t know what the future holds. Your records might get lost if your previous company gets a merger. The joint venture you helped gain traction might cease to exist after a year. Your university might get flooded, with their records not stored digitally.
