Please introduce yourself

My name is Dr. Rabia Anis, and I am from Hyderabad, Pakistan. I am a Dental Surgeon by profession and have worked as a lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the past 7 years. Recently I completed a Bachelor’s in Education, and I am now pursuing a Masters’s degree in Health Professional Education at the Agakhan University in Pakistan. Furthermore, I work as an E-Dental Consultant at SehatKahani.com and I am also a senior consultant at a travel agency.

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) wants the world to focus its attention on a #HealthierTomorrow for World Health Day. In your opinion, how can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

We can only achieve a healthier tomorrow if we are happier today.

Here are my thoughts to keep yourself happy today for a healthier tomorrow:

1. Appreciation

Always be grateful for what you have rather than nagging about what you may be lacking. You should always appreciate what you have and count your blessings as it is the ultimate key to happiness.

2. Kindness

Be kind to yourself and others. It’s equally important to practice kindness to yourself as you do to others. This is the power of acceptance and growth. Being kind to yourself promotes happiness and confidence. How you treat yourself sets the tone for how others will treat you

3. Managing Stress

Manage your stress and help others to overcome theirs. Stress is an inevitable part of life. So don’t drag it. Try to manage it by doing what gives you peace and joy. What I feel is that when you are stressed, you should always look to a person who’s in pain. Visit hospitals, rehabilitation centers, orphanages and nursing homes. This puts things into perspective and you realize that your life is good and blessed.

When you see a stressed or anxious friend or family member, always talk to the person. Let them know that you understand them and guide them with the same remedy you would follow to manage their stress.

4. Lifestyle Modification

Eat, sleep and move well. These three components are always interlinked, and once achieved, you will definitely experience a healthier tomorrow.

5. Get Social

Try to socialize as much as you can. You learn a lot from others and their experiences teach you to analyze problems you have in common. Social people have the opportunity to make others happy, and that feeling gives you peace and happiness itself. So grab it and spread smiles and happiness.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

Yes, definitely. World health day is important to spread awareness about general health and well-being around the Globe.

How will you support World Health Day?

I intend to teach my daughter the benefits of good health this year since she is old enough to understand them now. On the professional front, we have decided to put up posters to raise Health awareness at the university where I work as a lecturer.

As a healthcare worker, how do you prioritize your health?

I prioritize my health daily. As I am a dentist by profession, I ensure that my oral health is at its best. I also eat healthy food, such as fruit and vegetables, as much as possible. I go for a 1-hour walk daily, which contributes to my physical activity.

What is your top tip for our readers for looking after their health?

My top tip for remaining healthy is to know what you are eating. If you know whether what you are eating is unhealthy, you will start switching to more nutritious foods. This will automatically lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Why did you choose to work in healthcare?

My greatest source of inspiration has been my father and mother. They are both doctors by profession and as a child, I was very much motivated by their love to treat their patients. Also, biology was my favorite subject growing up. Both these reasons were responsible for me choosing to work in healthcare.

Do you recommend a career in healthcare?

If you’re passionate about helping people, finding a job in the healthcare industry can be one of the most rewarding career choices.

Regardless of your specific role in the industry, everything you do will play some part in helping people. Working in healthcare allows you to nurture your desire to help others and, at the same time, earn a living.

Roles are available to suit all skill sets. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to do a lot of studying or have extensive medical knowledge to get started in healthcare.

It’s a rapidly growing industry. Since healthcare workers are in such high demand, many employers will be offering extra training and personal development opportunities to help staff progress, giving you a great chance to branch out and expand your knowledge and experience.

It’s a fast-paced environment filled with challenges and offers the chance to work with people from all walks of life as there will never be a dull day in this industry.

What are the latest healthcare trends within your area of work?

There is a continuous development trend of current treatment trends in all postgraduate dental programs. Pediatric dentistry is also introduced as a separate department.

In the future, I will be switching from the post of lecturer in the maxillofacial surgery department to the senior position in the health professional education. Then I will focus more on curriculum development, justified assessment system, and different teaching methodologies.

Do you maintain a good work-life balance?

I don’t consider myself the best at handling work-life balance. But this has more to do with the uncertainties associated with both and not because of my inability to handle the balance.

What is the most important message you want to send out to future generations of healthcare workers?

The most important message for future healthcare workers would be to go for courses that not just enable them to follow their passion but also those in line with recent technological developments and skills. This will broaden their horizon and, thus, help contribute significantly to their field of expertise and healthcare in general.

Please introduce yourself.

Hi, my name is Dr. Surya Rajan Kurian, MDS and I’m a Periodontist from Kerala, India. I live in the UAE, and I’m preparing to take the HAAD exam so I can start working in Abu Dhabi, where my husband and his family live.

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) wants the world to focus its attention on a #HealthierTomorrow for World Health Day. How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

We can achieve a healthier tomorrow by properly training ourselves to keep our lives disciplined, including our daily regime, diet, behavior, and habits. Everything needs to be considered and controlled for a better life.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

World Health Day reminds people that our lives are important and should be taken care of rather than just letting it go for money and short-term happiness.

How will you mark World Health Day this year?

As a dentist, I would try my best to educate people about proper oral hygiene and how smoking and tobacco chewing can be life-threatening. And as a health care worker, I encourage my family to take good care of their oral hygiene and follow the regime to stay healthy.

What is your top tip for our readers for looking after their health?

I would suggest all the readers simply follow a proper brushing habit and flossing, which would keep our oral cavity clean. We should also visit a dentist at least once every 6 months because oral cavities are the root of many other health issues.

What is the most challenging aspect of being a dentist?

Working as a dentist is a challenge. Many people in today’s world still do not know the importance of oral health and how to maintain it. Additionally, convincing my patients and making them understand the correlation between oral health and other diseases in their bodies is the toughest part.

What are the latest healthcare trends within dentistry?

The latest trends in my field are the use of laser and microsurgery. It is very beneficial and easy for surgeons as well as the comfort of the patients when taken into consideration.

What is the best piece of advice you were given to succeed in your career?

The best advice given to me was: “Give time and ear to your patient, as they approach you with loads of worries and hope to get better with your treatment.”

Do you think CPD is important?

CPD helps to move ahead in our profession according to the developing technology.

What is your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement is getting the belief and trust of my patients, which I will always be thankful to God for.

What did you dream of doing when you were a child?

As a child, I dreamed of being a doctor as I loved to see them wearing white coats and hanging stethoscopes around their neck.

Please tell us a bit about you:

My name is Dr. Deepti Gulhane. I was born and raised in India. I did my MBBS and post-graduate in pediatrics from a leading institute in India. However, my eagerness to learn never stopped. I did my MRCPCH in London, a fellowship in pediatric neurology from the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital, London and did a diploma in pediatric neurodisability at the University of Sheffield in the UK.
Where are your colleagues from?

Having lived and worked in many countries, I love to make friends with different nationalities and learn more about their cultures and religion. I have colleagues from all over the world with different backgrounds, nationalities, cultures and religions, which really makes me feel rich.

In your opinion, how can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

Rome was not built in a day. Likewise, a healthier tomorrow takes effort and years of determination and persistence from children to the oldest people. Nowadays, many health issues are developing right from childhood because of lifestyle changes. Hence it’s extremely important to develop healthy eating habits, exercise, sleep, hygiene and discipline right from childhood to have a healthier tomorrow.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

Yes, absolutely, World Health Day is important and we should make every attempt to lead a disciplined lifestyle, clubbed with regular exercise, a healthy diet and meditation for mindfulness and healthy living.

As a healthcare worker, how do you prioritize your health?

Being a health care worker comes with an enormous amount of stress and irregular working hours. However, I feel it’s important to take the time out for exercise, meditation and I always make sure to eat healthily and get adequate sleep.

Eat healthily, drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day, sleep at least 7 hrs a day and exercise at least 40 minutes a day for a minimum of 5 days a week.

Why did you choose to work in healthcare?

Being in the health care sector gives me immense opportunities to create a difference in the lives of people around me and my patients.

What is the best piece of advice you were given to succeed in your career?

One of my professors once told me, one should always be a student for life. We are never old enough not to gain knowledge in life. And whatever you gain, share with others, as sharing is caring.

What did you dream of doing when you were a child?

I always dreamed of becoming a doctor and serving humanity and society. With God’s grace, I achieved my dream.

Please introduce yourself.

My Name is Soode Mashinchi and I’m an Iranian occupational therapist who has worked for 12 years in pediatrics.

I’m currently working in Iran, but I have the experience of working abroad and collaborating with colleagues from the United Kingdom, Belgium, India, Philippines and Lebanon.

How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

In my opinion, health is mental and physical, and we need to raise healthy children in all of these aspects to guarantee a healthier tomorrow.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

I believe all awareness days are important such as World Health Day, because you can generate awareness of a specific subject and make people understand its importance and various features, which eventually improves public knowledge.

As a healthcare worker, how do you prioritize your health?

I try to spend my spare time on all the things that help me refresh, such as my hobbies, then it would enhance my mental state and provide more tolerance.

What is your top tip for our readers for looking after their health?

Everyone should know that prioritizing themselves is the most important part of life, which helps them keep healthy and let them assist others to be healthy as well. But if we forget about ourselves and just pay attention to others’ situations, we will feel tired and depressed instead of feeling happy and healthy after a while.

Why did you choose to work in healthcare?

The only thing that can satisfy me is helping people feel good and I find the health care system accommodates this.

What is your favorite part of your role?

When a child achieves a developmental milestone or learns how to use a new skill and I get to share that progress with their parents.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="820" height="312" src="https://production-prod-trueprofile-blogassets-origin.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2022/04/Soode-1.jpg" alt="Soode Mashinchi pediatrics.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

Parental training is the most challenging part.

Do you recommend a career in healthcare?

In my opinion, it depends on a person’s characteristics, but OT is always my suggestion.

What is your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement is providing group therapy and family-based behavioral therapy sessions based on OT principles for the first time in my country.

Do you maintain a good work-life balance?

Unfortunately, the balance is off due to a lack of healthcare practitioners and demands for the service.

Who inspires you the most and why?

My inspiration comes from all the children and the families I interact with. They are my reason to keep on going forward.

What are your future career plans?

I will stay in my OT role because I love it and I’ll try my best to be the best version if myself in each aspect.

Please introduce yourself:

My name is Sharon De Cruz and I’m from Malaysia and work as a registered nurse. I have held a few roles in my career over the past 14 years as a bedside nurse, Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager and currently, I work as a Team Leader in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

Why did you choose to move your nursing career overseas?

I previously lived and worked in Saudi Arabia and currently, I’m in Bahrain. I chose to work in the Gulf region as the earning potential is better and the income is more lucrative. With my Certification in Critical Care from the University of South Australia, critical care units have been an advantage for me. The quality of life in Bahrain is good and the cost of living here is not too expensive compared to other GCC countries.

Where are your colleagues from?

I have many colleagues from India, Malaysia, the Philippines and also work with local Bahrainis.

How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

We can achieve a healthier tomorrow by making a change today through creating healthy habits and setting short-term and long-term goals. Steve Maraboli once said, ” The power to change your life lies in the simplest of steps”. We can set goals for a short-term period like 30 days or 60 days and long-term like 100 days or 365 days. It takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit, according to new research by Phillippa Lally and colleagues from the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre based at UCL Epidemiology and Public Health.

We need to analyze our daily routine and create a habit loop. Simple habits like stretching with simple yoga pose in bed when we wake up, brisk walking for 20 mins a day, or even preparing a healthy homemade breakfast or lunch before heading to work.

Start small and work towards the short-term goal, eventually to a long-term goal. “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” — Leonardo da Vinci. Always remember, simplicity matters more than motivation.

Change happens gradually. It does not have to be quick and results are also gradual. Create SMART behaviors or habits that do not require very high motivation. Make sure your goals are:

S – specific

M – measurable

A – attainable/ Action-based

R – realistic/ Relevant

T – time-based.

Last but not least “Aristotle said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” He is talking, far more eloquently than I ever could, about the value of repetition.

Do you think World Health Day is important? Why?

World Health Day is a reminder for everyone about the importance we should give to our health while caring for people around us.

How will your practice mark World Health Day this year?

As a Critical Care Nurse, my practice will support World Health Day and its theme by educating my patients on the importance of adhering to simple habits to enjoy a healthy life. As we all know, good health is huge wealth.

As a healthcare worker, how do you prioritize your health?

As a healthcare worker, I ensure to have 8 hours of sleep despite working morning or night shift and exercise 3 times per week, at least going for a brisk walk in the neighbourhood.

The most challenging aspect of my job is the schedules that have been fixed by employers working 12-hour shifts for 2 days nightshift and 2 days off followed by 2 days morning shift. The swift change in timing is very challenging to adjust to sleep hours.

What is your favorite part of your role?

My favorite part of my role is when my patients recover to better health after I work so hard managing their condition throughout my shift.

Do you maintain a good work-life balance?

I maintain a good work-life balance because I never talk about work out of work. Once I step out of that main door, what happens in the hospital remains there.

Please introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Rafika Ghrawi from Beirut, Lebanon. I currently live and work in Lebanon. I am a registered dietitian, work in clinical practice, manage my social media and have my podcast, Let’s Talk Nutrition on Anghami and Spotify.

What’s it like working as a dietitian in Lebanon?

I chose to remain in Lebanon because I believe that good healthcare is a right and should be affordable to the masses. With the current economic crisis, many professionals are being headhunted or are leaving the country for better opportunities; it is their every right. However, I still feel that it is essential to stay in Lebanon and fight this crisis in the best way possible so the Lebanese people can still have the proper care.

How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

A healthier tomorrow is an important topic. It is achievable in many ways. First, it is necessary to provide people with the correct information. On the other hand, it is essential to stop the spread of misinformation. For example, control fake news and allow only professionals to give health advice while acknowledging their disclosures. Spreading the correct information is essential and giving individuals the capacity to do so is necessary. Enabling flexible working schedules between virtual and physical attendance. In addition, companies can implement policies to make sure the employees get proper mental and physical health.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

Of course, people always need to be reminded of what is important. And our health is of the utmost importance. If we do not take care of it we won’t be able to function properly.

How do you prioritize your health?

I try to take breaks as much as possible and delegate my tasks when things get overwhelming. Learning to say no or I can’t deliver on short notice is important. As a dietitian, I am also mindful about what I eat and try to exercise as much as possible.

What is your top tip for our readers for looking after their health?

Just don’t take it for granted. Some people postpone working out, eating healthy, or going for a check-up at the doctor, and these individuals need to realize that their health is a priority. You cannot do well in your work or balance relationships without your health.

Why did you choose to work in healthcare?

I wanted to do something where I could help people become healthier versions of themselves.

What is your favorite part of your role?

When I see patients leading a healthier lifestyle, being able to decrease their medications, or enjoy a lifestyle they missed before due to illness.

What are the latest healthcare trends amongst dietitians and nutritionists?

Due to COVID-19, we now give online consultations. Many dietitians have switched to online consultations and can work from the comfort of their homes. Some dietitians are doing both like myself, where I have a physical location, and do online consults. In addition, individuals who suffer from transportation barriers can easily consult with the professionals they want remotely. I believe that as the world keeps progressing into a virtual scope, the way we give consultations and diet plans will change.

Do you think CPD is important?

Yes, I think that is the most important. Many recommendation changes have happened since I graduated from university. If you don’t have continued education to stay updated, you will eventually give patients outdated advice.

What is your biggest achievement?

I won the country representative award in 2021 to be recognized for my work as the country representative of Lebanon in the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It was announced at the Food and Nutrition Conference Expo and it was amazing.

Who do you look up to?

The person I look up to the most is my mother. She was a school teacher. When she passed away in 2020, I saw how her students and colleagues reacted. She inspired and supported generations on their paths and left a genuine mark. I would like to leave such a legacy. I made career shifts to do that.

What did you wish you knew before beginning your career as a dietitian?

Naturally, I am an empath. Dealing with patients who are in pain or are suffering leaves an empath truly affected. I remember as a student, the first 3 times I entered the ICU, I left it crying. It took me a while to learn how to detach my feelings.

How do you like to spend your spare time?

I am an avid reader, and if it’s a book I particularly like, I tend to binge read until I finish it. I am also blessed with a tight-knit family and amazing friends and I love their company.

Do you maintain a good work-life balance?

Sometimes, I’m great at balancing work-life and sometimes, things become a bit crazy. I am learning as I go. Lately, I have been setting personal rules, which include:

I don’t work after 6 pm on weekdays

On Saturdays, I don’t work after I finish my appointments for the day

Sundays are strictly off

What is your top tip for future generations of healthcare workers?

With the working hours of healthcare workers being very long, I would like to advise all future healthcare workers to make sure they take care of themselves and their health first.

What are your future career plans?

I am transitioning to a full-time freelancer instead of an employee. I have also launched my podcast and doing online courses.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Fatma Uguz and I am from Turkey. Currently, I am working in Dubai, UAE as a physiotherapist.

Do you recommend a career in Dubai or overseas?

It is a great opportunity to learn different cultures, and languages and work in different environments. There are too many things to learn. I dreamed of living in a multicultural environment. Dubai is one of the best multicultural, welcoming and fast developing cities in the world.

Where are your colleagues from?

My colleagues are from many places such as Germany, Portugal, Egypt, Pakistan, the Philippines, Serbia, Bosnia and the UK.

How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

We should focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle more. In this way, people wouldn’t suffer many diseases. For example, a sedentary lifestyle has become more common recently because of developing technology and working environments. This leads to some disorders, especially at younger ages than expected. It is better to avoid it before it becomes a more serious problem. Professionals need to raise awareness of this.

Do you think World Health Day is important?

Maybe we live a busier life than before and more distracted by the growing media. It is important to remember that the most precious thing in life is health.

Do you recommend a career in healthcare?

Of course. But I think the person who chooses a health care career should have great patience, passion for human life and good communication skills.

What is your biggest achievement?

My doctorate project received first prize in a scientific research competition. It was a technological project to promote health.

How can a healthier tomorrow be achieved?

I think this goal is achieved with the cooperating of populations and governments. Unfortunately, many people and some governments don’t pay enough attention to this fact, so scientists and healthcare professionals’ main duty is to inform people about the benefits of addressing the environment and improving health issues. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has the best program which focuses on increasing the health of all age groups, preventing of prevalence, communicating and non-communicating diseases and rules of preprimary, primary, secondary, tertiary in all of the problems that threatened the health of the population and environment and the space around the earth.

As a healthcare worker, how do you prioritize your health?

These days, people suffer from COVID-19, cardiovascular and diabetic syndemics. People are also suffering from psychiatric illnesses caused by quarantine and changes in lifestyle due to COVID-19. I have experienced side effects from long COVID, so now I do my best to control these side effects by taking prescription drugs, observing basic lifestyle principles and working part-time so I can come back to work as a healthy doctor. In addition, I’m doing physical activity, learning English and passing job tests to work in Dubai and get a work permit to work in Dubai; so that I try to minimize the effects of brain fog due to COVID-19.

What is your top tip for our readers for looking after their health?

Adhere to the principles of a healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding alcohol and smoking and healthy sleep, using methods that improve people’s mental health and regular health checks.

In case of illness, take the necessary medicine and book routine examinations to prevent the aggravation of a disease or the occurrence of complications of diseases and pay attention to the environment, and avoiding methods that pollute the environment.

I spend most of my time with my family and I am very interested in the physical and mental needs of my spouse and our children, and at the same time I enjoy friendly parties with or without family. Studying, traveling is very enjoyable. Sewing since childhood is an art where I can forget my sorrows.
